(Summary of Friday Sermon)

After having greeted everybody with the Salutations of Peace, the Khalifatullah read the Tashahhud, Taouz and Surah Al Fatiha and then he said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنصَابُ وَالأَزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ۝

“O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, and idols and divining arrows are an abomination, a work of the devil. Do not approach them so that you may prosper.” (Chapter 5 Verse 91)

The consumption of alcoholic beverages in any form is strictly forbidden in Islam. It is a satanic work which forces man to his ruin. It is a first step towards his moral social and economic degradation.

Alcoholic beverages – beer, rum, whiskey, brandy, wine, vodka etc. – have a significant effect on development and behaviour of the individual. They pollute his mind to such an extent that he cannot make the difference between good and evil.

His intoxication makes him forget the blessings and gifts of his Creator. He is buried in the clutches of Satan until hatred, jealousy, hostility and ingratitude are rooted deep in his heart.

“The devil only desires to cause enmity and hatred to spring in your midst by means of intoxicants and games of chance, and to keep you off from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you then desist?” (Chapter 5 Verse 92)

The drunkard easily loses control of his will and his balance; he does not understand exactly what he does or what he says. He is in perpetual self confusion. In a word, he loses his clarity. This takes him to commit many acts and unhealthy shame.

In addition, he spreads around him unhealthy and unpleasant odour, which irritates non-drinkers and the angels in particular. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Do not harm yourself, and do not harm others either.”

Alcoholic beverages cause more damage than benefit. They open the door to other sins such as theft, rape, suicide, homicide, murder, lies, slander, immorality, obscenity and so on.

Hazrat Uthman (May Allah be pleased with him) said:
“Avoid alcoholic drink because it is the root of all evil.”

Alcohol destroys not only the shame and the reason of man, but it also removes his faith
(Iman). If the alcoholic dies in a state of intoxication, he dies without faith, although he is a Muslim. And his place will be the fire of hell.

“Whoever commits adultery is not a believer when he does it; likewise the drinker is not a believer when consuming alcohol.” (Ibn Majah, Ahmad)

The alcoholic wastes his money in a reckless manner; he neglects his duty and responsibility to the members of his family, his community and the poor in particular. A large sum of money is drained instead of being used to relieve the poor or the well-being of his family.

“And do not waste unnecessarily, as spendthrifts are brothers of the devils and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.” (Chapter 17 Verses 27-28).

Consuming alcoholic beverages raises the wrath of Allah, helps to destroy the organism, reduces man to a very low level, inhibits the proper functioning of society and leads man towards his loss. “Do not expose yourself with your own hands to perdition.” (Chapter 2 Verse 196)

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) clearly showed that no one will escape the wrath of Allah if alcoholic beverages becomes the order of the day.

According to a Hadith the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that there are fifteen things that will bring disasters on the community, and one of these fifteen things is when liquor will be consumed. Is the community wherein we live today facing poverty, misery, disgrace and degradation? Is this not a disaster?

Alcohol is a poison for the body of man. Some bold individuals whose intelligence does not exceed their clavicle argue that alcohol and particularly beer and whiskey ‘cleanse’ the intestines and increases appetite, while others who supposedly have “more knowledge” assume that ‘they are good for digestion’.

Let us see what does the greatest man the world has ever known, think. Wa’il Al-Hazrani reports that Tariq bin Suwaidi (May Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about wine. It prohibited. The man said:
“Verily I am preparing a medicine.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “This is not a medicine but a disease.” (Muslim)

It is high time for those who consume alcohol to make a firm resolution to get rid of this great evil before their faith
(Iman) disappears from their heart and before their body disintegrate further. Avoid intoxicants because it is the root of all evils.

I swear by Allah that faith
(Iman) and alcohol cannot coexist in the heart of the believer, one or the other disappear from his heart.

To avoid the worst on earth and in the Hereafter, every alcoholic must repent with sincere repentance and then not touch a single drop of this impure and unlawful
(Haraam) liquid. It applies also to any form of drugs.

O Allah, preserve us from the root of evil and guide us on the right path.
Ameen.
